Research areas:
Greek Orthodox (Byzantine) chant; music and healing; music and tourism, tradition/modernity-complexes; music and culture, identity and history; music as torture in democracies in the so-called global war against terror.

My work on the Greek Orthodox musical tradition at Mount Athos has recently been published – it concerns, among other things, aspects of tradition, modernity and Europe:
The Past Is Always Present: The Revival of the Byzantine Musical Tradition at Mount Athos, Lanham: The Scarecrow Press (2012).

My future research plans include a project on hard rock (heavy metal and punk) in Greece focusing on how the current crisis is handled in Greek youth and counter culture. The project involves ethnomusicological fieldwork at Athens and Thessaloniki.
