Abstract

Mobility lies at the heart of the study of global history. The movement of peoples, the exchange of goods, ideas and information, and the constantly shifting and uneven patterns of connectedness are among the profoundest forces in world history and had powerful geopolitical, cultural and economic consequences: empires, divergences, and cultural hierarchies. No continent has been more deeply involved in these processes than Europe- and so it remains.
