The First World War as Global War

Screen shot book cover

In this talk, Maartje Abbenhuis (University of Auckland) and Ismee Tames (Netherlands Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Amsterdam), discuss the challenges of writing a global history of the First World War. While most general histories of the conflict tend to focus on the major belligerents and the European military theatres, their history not only integrates the experiences and roles of neutral, non-belligerent and subject communities but also argues that it is only by doing so that it is possible to appreciate the truly global and catastrophic impacts of the war.
