Europe Day Seminar

CEMES will once again celebrate Europe Day.

CEMES will once again celebrate Europe Day when the French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman held his historic speech to present the Schuman Declaration that proposed the European Coal and Steel Community on 9 May 1950. Europe has been in a situation of unprecedented challenges in recent years. These range from the acute geopolitical threat from Russia, the breakdown of the transatlantic alliance and major threats to the economic stability of Europe, whether from Chinese exports or the looming energy crisis caused by the Iran war. This seminar organises two panels that discuss two important European challenges.

The first one takes a closer look at cross-border crime in a more open Europe shaped by the Schengen agreement and the Single European Market. Cross-border crime is becoming a serious challenge for the European Union and its member states and one that serious undermine the legitimacy of the approach to national borders. The EU thus needs both to develop new policies and handle the political fallout. This panel discuss these themes and others from an interdisciplinary angle.

The second panel discusses the geopolitical threat from Russia in Northern Europe, focusing on the Nordic countries and Germany. Given the fear of many security experts that we may see an attack from Russia already this year, three leading experts discuss the current Northern European rearmament and the difficulties all countries have in preparing for what seems and imminent threat.
