Body and Emotions in the Spectacle of Borders: Political Pedagogy
Open, digital seminar with PhD researcher in the field of kinship, gender, and race politics, Ali Ali from the University of Helsinki.
The political is personal and intimate. But what does this mean when we consider the body and emotions as the most personal and intimate aspects of our being? And how do bodily and sensory experiences shape political consciousness?
I explore how people learn about boundaries (of state, race and gender) and about racist and patriarchal violence through their interactions and everyday lives, as well as through their bodily experiences of policing and boundary-setting within government institutions and society at large.
I draw on (auto)ethnography to demonstrate how changes in political consciousness and action do not occur solely or primarily in events and projects presented as political, but rather through experiencing gender and race politics directly with body and soul.
The presentation will be followed by a discussion with and questions from participants.
The seminar is arranged by the Öresund Comparative Borderland Research Group and funded by CEMES.
