Om konferencen: Europæeren Herman Bang

Hvor Herman Bangs centrale placering i dansk litteraturhistorie er indiskutabel, er hans rolle og betydning som forfatter og teatermand inden for den europæiske modernisme fortsat uudforsket. Ligesådan har Bangs vidtstrakte europæiske kontaktflade og såvel kunstneriske som journalistiske virke rundt omkring i Europa kun i et beskedent omfang været behandlet videnskabeligt.
I de senere år har man dog kunnet registrere en stigende international interesse for Bangs europæiske forfatterskab og biografi. På konferencen ”Europæeren Herman Bang” sætter en række af de fremmeste Herman Bang-specialister fra ind- og udland fokus på tre underbelyste europæiske dimensioner af Herman Bangs værk og virke:
1) hans rolle og reception som forfatter, journalist og intellektuel,
2) hans opfattelse og beskrivelse af transnationale geografier og kulturer,
3) hans indflydelse på den kunstneriske og kulturelle kontinentalisering i årtierne op til Første Verdenskrig.

About the conference

Herman Bang – A European Writer, Artist and Journalist around 1900

The Danish writer Herman Bang was not only part of the Scandinavian modernization of society and arts around 1900 but also took vividly part in the cultural continentalization of Europe in the decades before World War 1. However, his modernist works of literature in a European context as well as his role as a cultural mediator between the French, German and Nordic publics have hardly been dealt with in existing research. His journalism and not least his contributions to promoting the new Scandinavian drama in different European centres also call for a closer scholarly attention. Danish, German and British scholars are showing an increasing interest in Herman Bang’s European position, and it is the aim of the conference to establish an interdisciplinary dialogue between international experts and to promote new insights into the European dimensions of a famous Danish cultural key figure.
