Stages of Memory and Testimony Institutional responsibility, victim participation, and politics of listening

Seminar with Nuran David Çalış, playwright, documentary filmmaker, and director and Emilie Pine, professor of modern drama at University College Dublin, author and playwright.

Abstract

The meanings, ethics, and representational techniques involved in bearing witness have been a recurring discussion within memory studies. This event focuses on memory and testimony performed on stage, as this practice highlights and amplifies the act of witnessing, while also fostering discussions on the spectrum of participation, from giving voice to providing space. It also merges the visible and audible, inviting a politics of listening by approaching the fourth wall between the stage and the audience in different ways. It also raises questions about institutional responsibility for other experiences and people and concerns about producing voices to be disseminated in a cultural market.
